Story Six: SCIF

SCIF organization boomed after the news spread. People flocked bringing their children into the "school", hoping for change. Through their children, the next generation of Stalkers will be civil and domesticated. Then, the only problem I had was the cafeteria "food" and the "teachers". Both had valid explanations. The food, worse than the teachers.
The influx of students excited the other kids. The possibility for relationships was at a high level. No more sitting in solitary silence listening to the wind hit against the dorm bars. Schedules were strict. Only during lunch did I ever cross paths with another prisoner, the term coined by us to use rather than student. I as well as the Smithinson children had a different schedule. SCIF had acquired knowledge of our status in the Syndicate. We were the Kazu.

At each lunch break I'd meet a different person.
Suzanna "Blaze" and her older brother Johnathan "Flash". The two amuse me with their sibling feuds day to day. Flash, being the uncontrollable loudmouth who loved to show off. Blaze always putting him in place with her fiery attitude and determination.
Page had always been an antisocial person. Never really speaking up she'd just stare at me as I spoke to others. But her abilities really grabbed my attention. She's loyal and an attentive learner. With her ability to create masterful explosives and kindheartedness, I knew she'd be needed sometime or another later in my future.
Lilialanna and Andromeda a duo I will never forget. Li and Andi is what they preferred to go by. Their paring also caused many debates, mostly concerning maturity. Li being the mature counterpart of Andi. I can agree. Although, that was not the reason why I remember them so well. They brought something to light I wish I never knew.
SCIF was eliminating those who were too misbehaved and "uncivilized". Everyone knew that. That's why they all kept quiet. They jumped when teacher said jump. They danced when teachers said dance. They remained quiet as the teacher beat them for playing an instrument incorrectly.

But secretly, they wanted to be like us Kazu. Everyone believed that, when you fail, you must return home shamed by a crowd of onlookers, who live near you and will always shame you and your family. When that happens they will have a chance to flee outside the walls and join the syndicate and rise up the ranks of insurgency. But no one's ever heard or seen a crowd, so it was always a dangerous mystery of what truly went on. I noticed that some of those who sat with me during lunch would disappear to never be seen again. After Andi and Le, I decided to investigate.

I escaped quietly in the night. No eyes. No alarms. Turning through the winding halls of the facility, I follow the cold metal skeleton of the building. Many can easily get lost in the midst of its many angles and turns. It was intentionally designed to be a labyrinth in case children tried to escape. I make my way to the basement. The lights dimmed and air musky of sweat and tears, I walk and find many black garbage bags thrown on the floor. Trash disposal must be a burden. I walk on them, since the floor was made of them. The steps were in the middle of being soft and hard. And the sounds following were unpleasantly liquid like. I follow an manned assembly line we're the bags are being carried away. As they push the bags past I follow and stop. I see workers. Their faces are blank and eyes glistening. They  blink staring into space as they chop with their hatchets at the bags.
Slowly, I continue forward. The same expression is on the face of those obligated with pulling out white and red rounded and broken sticks from the bag. I wish to get a closer look, but I fear being detected.

I follow the limp bags.

The bags become bodies, and the bodies become slabs.

When the slabs fall into the molting pot of grease I turn and run away.

The rest of my lunches I spent my time sitting silently, watching the others eat. I recognized two of those many bags. I was following them through the assembly. At rest without peace. Their mouths were open with teeth pulled right out of them;  the sockets of their eyes were abysses like their mouths and all the hair missing from their bodies. Nobody likes hair in their food.

"This is ridiculous!" Renell whispered in a yelling tone to the other Kazu. "These freaks can get away with this and even be supported and organized by the government, but one Stalker shoplifts a candy bar and is hanged." she ranted on, but I couldn't bare to listen to the truth.

I don't think they plan on "fixing us" or whatever they promised our families. I think our only role is to entertain. Every night, older men they come to watch. They always come with a sense of unease following close behind and pleasure just nearby. We are known to look "exotic." We "rehearse" during the day and preform every night. Like circus animals, dressed for their amusement, we dance and show off our abilities as part of the show, and, like they've acquired an unforeseen treasure, they hoot, holler, and drink.

I look over at the Kazu. They look so strong and serious, despite the ridiculousness of how little they're covered up. They were always the main attractions because of how magnificent their abilities where. I was just a support, throwing up balls of paint, glitter or confetti, and causing them to explode.

Great unrest was building up among us students. The things they made us do with the men after the shows... we were tired. we felt we were used. we wanted out. So, we looked to the Kazu. They had no outside connection, but they had power, and they had control, and they had control over their powers. Just as Ten was about to go up on stage, the crowd favorite of the favorites, I looked towards her and she nodded back to the Kazu. When I glanced over I saw Letrelle mouth "tonight."

I always had this deep feeling that procrastination is a product of nature within mankind. I'd always tried to find a way to best explain that to my forever dissatisfied wife, and now I know the perfect example, if I ever get the chance to speak with her again or if she'll even want to talk to me after this.

The kids were smart. We under estimated them. There was a small group of intelligent kids we just couldn't pick out of the crowd, but they made sure we knew what to call them: the Kazu. The first wave of their attack wasn't too bad or maybe it was the worse of them all. Somehow they had gained control of the facility's power and controls. They sent out messages to the higher ups but everyone could see what was said. The first message: STOP TRAFFICKING US. It was straightforward, a warranted and valid request, but my job isn't to go around advocating; it's to enforce the rules, and, right now, I'm supposed to make sure this kid Ten stays in order. As the old freak steps out the room buckling his pants and grumbling, he looks over to me and frowns. "What are you looking at? Learn how to get that bitch tamed and then you'll earn your pay." He growled as he left the facility. Ten stepped out, calm and untouched. I had gained a liking towards Ten- as a friend I'm not like those freaks. She's intelligent, get's me thinking, but, there's this deep look in her eyes that tell me that she doesn't enjoy a second of our talks or even likes me. She'd always told me how I should quit, but it's the only job I can work. Not that I'd take advice from a kid anyways.

The second wave, they send another message: they had acquired evidence of what actually goes on here. They were going to send it out to the public unless they let them free. The even offered to leave society all together and live outside the walls. Not all the kids seemed to agree with that option, but they also didn't want to live here.

The third wave... they got names and faces. The identities of everyone who works here and every patron that's come by. They didn't even give the leaders a moment to  negotiate. They got tired of wait I guess, or maybe they were mad that it would take extreme measures to make us do the right thing. Measures that would cut us down to nothing. They released the evidence, the names, the pictures , the videos. The public was appalled. They didn't see the descendants of a savage species; they saw children. But the organizations lights weren't cut out by the people, the public. The children caused the black out.

That when I realized.

Among the flames, in what seemingly is your final moments just before the black shroud of darkness spreads over you, a jolt of reflection passes over you and a fiery passion comes over you where all your desires that you wish you had fulfilled and had plenty of time to do so. It burns more than the blue flame overwhelming your body, and you can't find the light as the fires surrounding are too bright. All there is to do is dwell, to drown in sorrow. Now I know why she hated me so much. Will she hate me even more now? Spit into my ashes, giving me the water I so desperately need now? Is this what'll be like? Once I die? Will it be like this because I helped with all of this or will I burn because of my other past decisions that led up to this?

All I can do is burn and stare out into the chaos as children take whatever they can as weapons, lead by their small group, lead by Ten. The small group of children killed the adults in such haste and organization, my eyes could barely keep up, but that might be because i I was losing consciousness...

We had received notification from the Possessor herself. She thought the people who were in charge were still alive and still had some form of control. She was planing a publicity stunt. "We" (the dead leaders) had five days to get SCIF together, then she would have Martinet bring in some forces to arrest and remove the children and workers.

The remaining days before then, we all partied, dance, and sung out of our own will. We were hungry, yes. and sad. But, the Kazu told us about how wonderful working for The Syndicate will be when we leave. We could change the world.

So, before the army got here, all of us made our way outside the boarder. The rest is history.
