Book Four
REALITY FOUR
INTRODUCTION

An amalgamation of traffic and raindrops, a myriad of men walking heel to toe on the neon-lit pathways, a flier of a missing boy struggles through the droplets beating against it, forced to advance by the soft wind, and a city that doesn't know how it feels to see the light of day. The city is filled with a dizzying number of emotions and reactions to life; the ambiguity and finality of those reactions being inescapable.
The city won't always be like this. A cataclysmic event will occur within it, random and unexpected, that will change the lives of everyone.
Unheard abilities began to appear left and right, magic that evolved. At least that's what the scientists conjectured.
It must have been but a brief moment, but their world turned black and white. Vehicles froze in place, and, as though their eyes were looking through a screen, the world cracked. They heard the biggest metal crunching sound they'd ever heard in their life, but it was in their heads like rods were bending beneath their skulls.
Before the color of the world faded completely, the occupants witnessed themselves out of body suddenly falling upwards. As though the reality was warping anew. Cadavers in black bags fell from the sky starting one by one, falling by the thousands. They were disintegrating in the process, becoming one with the darkness. Of course, when it came down to it, it was merely an illusion the mayor concluded.
An illusion. The mind had temporarily loosened its grip on reality. Leading old life towards its conclusion, before the distortions in reality grew even more insistent and increasingly apparent. With each passage of time, the warping intensified. Fragments of souls splintered. Nothing of the original existence was retained, but the "illusion" remained.
The darkness became increasingly erratic as though having a consciousness of its own, or maybe the consciousness had already existed. People, souls, demons began to crawl out the shadows taking people with them into the pitch black. Some people claim they saw the faces of their lost ones on the shadow beings just before their living mothers or brothers were grabbed, dragged, and never seen again. The shadows sucked them in.
What remains true to reality is the present. Life returns to normality. At equilibrium, people resume their roles and those within the city's limits that have abilities beyond what humans were capable of before maintaining the consistency. There are those who have take the role of the heroes of the city and kingdoms around it. They are the guardian angels while shadow demons terrorize civilizations around the world.
